What Does It Mean to Rightly Divide the Word of Truth?

2 Timothy 2:15 gives us one of the most important instructions in all of Scripture. Understanding what it means to rightly divide changes everything about how we read the Bible.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”2 Timothy 2:15

This verse contains what may be the most important instruction in all of Paul’s letters for the serious Bible student: rightly divide the word of truth.

What Does “Rightly Divide” Mean?

The Greek word translated “rightly dividing” is orthotomeo — literally, to cut straight. A surgeon cuts with precision. A carpenter cuts with accuracy. Paul’s point is that the Bible student must handle the Word of God with that same kind of care.

Not all of the Bible is written to you, though all of it is written for you. God spoke to Noah. God spoke to Abraham. God gave Moses the Law. God gave prophecies to Israel through the prophets. But you are not Noah, Abraham, Moses, or Israel.

The Dispensation of Grace

Paul introduces himself in Ephesians 3:2 as the steward of a specific revelation — the dispensation of the grace of God. This is not just a new chapter in God’s story. It is a distinct program, with distinct doctrine, given specifically to the Gentiles through Paul.

When we rightly divide Scripture, we recognize that Paul’s letters — Romans through Philemon — contain the direct doctrine for the Church, the Body of Christ, today. This doesn’t diminish the rest of Scripture. It illuminates it.

Start Here

If you’re new to dispensational Bible study, start with Paul. Read Romans, then Ephesians. Ask: who is speaking? Who is being spoken to? What time period? What covenant?

Those questions will begin to open the Word in a way that topical or devotional reading never could.
